Development and Communications Intern


Work with a dynamic team of staff, youth, and volunteers to gain a broad range of development and communications skills. Connect with DC business and civic leaders as you help support LGBTQ youth.

The Development and Communications Intern will work closely with the Development Director and the Development and Communications Coordinator on various projects including outreach to donors and sponsors, event communications, and planning major donor events. The intern must be available for 20 hours a week. This position is available starting in August and end date is flexible.


  • Assist in planning and executing beneficiary and in-house supporter events
  • Active involvement in all aspects of planning and executing Fall Brunch, SMYAL’s signature fundraiser
  • Assist in contacting current and potential sponsors and donors
  • Create materials to be used for fundraising and marketing
  • Develop content for social media
  • Create email blasts and newsletters for supporters
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Excellent writing skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office suite
  • Must be sensitive to issues of diversity, including sexual orientation and gender identity
  • Professional demeanor, ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, adapt to changing priorities, and manage work under deadlines
