Every year the grassroots advocacy organization, the National LGBTQ Task Force, holds a conference entitled “Creating Change.” The conference is designed to promote skill building for LGBTQ and allied communities, helping to educate and inform people on current issues and best practices for taking action in their communities.
This year SMYAL sent two staff members, a youth fellow, and a youth living in our transitional housing to Creating Change, held in Philadelphia from January 17 to January 22.
Each of the SMYAL team wrote reflections on their experiences.
Transitional Housing resident Tiara wrote a moving reflection on the power of freedom of assembly, community, and sharing the perspective of an African immigrant and a transwoman.
Programs Director Adalphie wrote about the privilege of traveling with inspiring young people and the power of affirmation via the conference segments.
Peer Education Coordinator Ameirah explained her eye opening experience seeing the power of grassroots organizing.
Youth Fellow Tyrese found the conference to be much more interesting than anticipated, and felt it was a great weekend celebrating black joy.
SMYAL is so thrilled that each person had such a transformative experience at Creating Change 2017 and we cannot wait to implement everything learned in our work here.
